Additional thoughts about composing with a limited number of shapes:

  • Varying the size of the major planes can drive your exploration of compositional alternatives.
  • Exploration is a key element of composing.
  • The key point of multiple sketches, each worked out to the best of your ability, is to be able to see and compare them. In this way, you get a chance to become acquainted with the shape / line in the landscape and gain insight into the elements that will be emphasized in the painting.

If you review the original photo (available as a download in this episode), notice what Scott chose to leave out of the scene (right foreground). Learn to overlook the elements in a photo (or in your field of vision) that don't contribute to the strength of a scene.

With one of your images and earlier 10 Line drawings from Series 1, try to compose 8-10 alternative compositional drawings based on the takeaways from this episode.

Develop each idea with 10 Lines in various ways.

With your 10 line drawings, determine your value planes with your value markers.

  • 10 Line Drawings
  • Drawing Journal
  • Pencil
  • Value Markers
