Composing with Mass

Congratulations! You've finished the course!

Scott expands composition techniques to include shape, mass and value.

6min 35sec

Establishing the major dark shapes and / or shadow(s) will help to evaluate the interest / variety of:

  • Exterior lines.
  • Interior lines.
  • Pattern(s).
  • Unequal distribution of light and shadow masses.

The focus at this point is still on placement. Dark shapes are added as another tool to help get a "read" on the composition.

Iteration is essential to success.

Plan to develop many sketches.

Select five prior line composition sketches and develop five new ones. Try to maintain infinite variety within exterior and interior lines.

Journal your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of each sketch.

Establish a pattern for the dark shapes in all sketches.

  • Drawing Journal
  • Pencil
  • Value Markers
