Your eye will be attracted to small shapes -- especially if they are in isolated areas.

Use shapes that aren't in the scene.

Find a photograph or a painting that has a predominance of shadow or is based on large dark shapes.

Develop alternative gesture studies of the scene without adding any fine dark shapes.

Take one of the gestures and add some fine dark shapes and attempt to place then near the center of interest.

Compare the results.
