Water Reflection

Scott uses several photos to identify the changes to light and shadow as they reflect in water. He then paints two small gesture studies of water reflections.

These observations are guidelines. As such, they apply in most cases. There are exceptions. Use the guidelines to guide your observation.

In water:

  • Light shapes reflect darker and cooler.
  • Shadow shapes reflect lighter and warmer.
  • The separation between light and shadow will be greater on land than it is in water.

Most colors transition from yellow, through red to blue as it recedes.

There is also a difference in edge quality in water reflections. In the water, edges are softer.
