Establishing a gray scale value for your major masses will help evaluate the strength and future direction for a composition.

Typically I will use the following approach:

  • Limited number of lines for placement of major masses.
  • Add gray scale values for major shapes to establish proportion of shadow and light.

To find the character of major lines in the landscape, develop a quick gesture drawing of just the line. Repeat until you have confidence in your understanding.
