Variety and Harmony

Scott explores the compositional balance between variety and harmony.

17min

A good painting has both variety and harmony.

Variety and harmony are:

  • In opposition to one another. Too much harmony creates boredom. Too much variety creates chaos. Therefore, the goal is to create balance between the two.
  • Personal decisions. As frustrating as it might be, there is no absolute right and wrong.  What is "right" is a matter of personal preference.

Finding your personal balance requires that you experiment.
